Mi’kmaq community defies Ottawa’s rules on elver fishing
Some Mi’kmaq fishers are continuing to refuse Ottawa’s 2025 quotas and locations for fishing baby eels, called elvers. Band members from Sipekne’katik First Nation have been fishing on the Fitzroy River, in Hubbards, Nova Scotia, which had been assigned to other licence holders. The federal government had transferred half the elver quota to First Nations this year, but three bands say they aren’t accepting federal regulations. (April 17, 2025)
